Constantine Constructors, under its ongoing contract with St Johns County (FL) Public Works Department (SJCPWD), has been working to improve sidewalk infrastructure for the County's residents. One facet of this effort is to connect existing sidewalks, providing safer and more suitable routes for children to bike to area schools.
To successfully complete this project, Constantine had to comply with FDOT standards and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). It was necessary to install gravity walls and FDOT index 870 railing in areas that had existing storm water inlets which would otherwise pose a threat to pedestrians and bikers.
Coordination with multiple utility providers had to be performed on this 700-foot-long sidewalk installation, requiring greater effort to realize successful project completion. Despite design challenges, the project was completed under budget, which allowed the County to select additional future sidewalk improvements, benefitting residents in other areas of the county.
