Decatur Utilities 2013 Water Treatment Improvements-Decatur, AL

Decatur Utilities provides potable water for the City of Decatur, AL and also sells wholesale water to other water systems in Morgan County, Lawrence County, and Limestone County. The water treatment plant is permitted at a capacity of 68 mgd and generally consists of conventional surface water treatment processes that include flocculation, settling, dual-media filtration, disinfection, pH adjustment, and phosphate addition. Portions of the plant were installed as early as 1938 and several equipment items had not been updated in many years. This resulted in problems that included poor reliability, wasting of process water through leaks, and wasted electrical energy. Decatur Utilities used Constantine Engineering in 2012 to submit an SRF Funding Application to ADEM to make improvements to the water plant. The project was funded in 2013 and construction began in late 2013 after Constantine completed the construction documents.

The improvements included the following items:

- Replacement of four 100-hp Dry-Pit Submersible Sludge Transfer Pumps

- Replacement of one 125 hp Vertical Turbine Filter Backwash Pump

- Replacement of 36 18-inch diameter mud valves

- Replacement of 18 6-inch diameter mud valves

- Installation of sludge pump-out station

- Installation of 9 channel isolation gates

- Installation of energy-efficient interior lighting fixtures
